Originally, the movie itself is an adaptation of author Patricia Highsmith’s novel of the same name which was released in 1995 and captivated readers worldwide. Now, Netflix is all set to remind the viewers of just why this story is loved by all. The story essentially follows the man, Tom Ripley who is a con artist, serial killer and a man who lies like no other.

Ripley’s Cast

While the limited series features Andrew Scott in the titular role, it also includes Johnny Flynn as Dickie Greenleaf, Dakota Fanning as Marge Sherwood, Eliot Sumner as Freddie Miles and Maurizio Lombardi as Inspector Pietro Ravini.

Eliot Sumner in Ripley

Eliot Sumner, an English singer, songwriter and actor is the child of musician Sting and actress Trudie Styler. The 33-year-old came out as a non-binary individual in 2015. They have previously showed their acting mettle in movies and TV shows such as No Time to Die, The Gentlemen, and Infinite Storm.

Sumner plays the iconic role of Frederick “Freddie” Miles who is the school friend of Dickie Greenleaf. The book describes Freddie as an “overweight American with carrot-red hair.” He is a “self-styled playwright” with hotelier parents.

As per the show writer, director and creator, Steven Zillian, it was because of the sophistication and uniqueness that Sumner brought that he was hired for the role.

I auditioned literally 200 people [for that part] and I would say 95% of those people were doing a [Philip Seymour] Hoffman impression. You know, he was so good in that movie. He’s indelible to people in that in that part, that when actors came to read for the part, they kind of did him. And Eliot didn’t.”

It’ll be interesting to see Sumner what Sumner does to bring a role to life that was immortalized by the late Philip Seymour Hoffman.
