Why Are Brush Fires Prompting Road Closures and Evacuations on Maui?

On Thursday afternoon, Maui has been forced to close roads and evacuate due to at least two brush fires.

Firefighters on Maui responded to a one-alarm fire just after 1:00 p.m. On Kamaile Street near the Wailuku country Estates subdivision, two homes are being evacuated due to the fire.

Kahekili Highway has been closed between Kamaile Street and Waiehu Beach road while fire officials continue to fight the blaze.

A second brush fire in the vicinity of the AMG Armory prompted Maui officials to close both lanes of Veterans Highway. Both lanes were re-opened at 4:07 pm.

The cause of the fires is unknown at this time. No structures have been damaged and no injuries have been reported.
